What is Sensory Integration Therapy?
Sensory integration therapy (SIT) is a method of intervention wherein parents and/or professionals work with children with hypersensitivity (increased sensitivity) or hyposensitivity (limited sensitivity or numbness) through play activities to help with sensory information processing - that is information that enters through sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. In simpler words, it is to teach children as to how to use all their senses together.
What problems does SIT help with? 10 signs your child may benefit from SIT.
1. Overreacting to sensory stimuli
2. Avoiding activities involving sensory experiences like playing with sand or water.
3. Having difficulty in balancing, motor skills, coordination, etc.
4. Erratic responses to certain sensory input - either seeking it too much (hyposensitivity) or being too sensitive to it and avoiding it altogether (hypersensitivity)
5. Difficulty with interactive or imaginary play and always seeking repetitive activities.
6. Delayed developmental milestones, especially in the motor areas.
7. Difficulty in dealing with transition in routine.
8. Social challenges.
9. Frequent meltdowns or tantrums.
10. Engaging in repetitive activities like hand flapping or rocking for self-regulation.
Oral Placement Therapy is a speech therapy which utilizes a combination of:
Auditory Stimulation
